Minimally invasive surgery enables surgeons to limit the size and number of incisions required. It is also safer than traditional or open surgery and allows the patient to recover quickly with a shorter hospital stay. Pain is also much less along with fewer complications. Other benefits include less blood loss, less risk of infection, smaller scars and faster recovery after surgery.

Minimally invasive surgeries are performed for many important parts of the body. These include brain surgery, heart surgery, kidney transplants, etc. It is also used for more general surgeries such as orthopedic surgery, gynecologic surgery, colon surgery, etc.

Laparoscopy and robotic surgery are two types of minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopy is done through small incisions using tiny cameras and small tubes. Robotic surgery provides a magnified, 3D views to the surgeon and enables the surgery with more precision and flexibility.
